Board of Directors

Sharon Kour

Hometown: Vancouver, BC (Unceded territories of the Tsawassen, Squamish Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam Nations)

Sharon co-founded MusicBox with Shazeen in 2002, when they were both in their first year at the University of Toronto. She is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and a Juris Doctor from Western University. Currently, she is a partner at Weisz Fell Kour LLP, an insolvency and restructuring boutique. As the mother of two children, she knows how essential music education is for children and families, and supporting healthy children and communities.

Shazeen co-founded MusicBox with Sharon in 2002 as first year undergraduate students at the University of Toronto and is currently the President of the Board of Directors. She is a practicing pediatrician at Unity Health Toronto and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. She holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Shazeen was led into medicine by the families and children in MusicBox programs, seeing first-hand the impact of arts and music education on whole and healthy child development. She continues to advocate for access to education and programming for all children, especially those facing marginalization.

Shazeen Suleman

Hometown: Vancouver, BC (Unceded territories of the Tsawassen, Squamish Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam Nations)

Jennifer joined the Board of Directors in 2020. She has previously worked as a preschool music teacher and choreographer for multiple children's theater companies including Acting UP Musical Theatre, which she co-founded. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She currently works as a campaign and policy lead with the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and as a project coordinator with the Global Climate and Health Alliance, and has nearly a decade of experience stewarding the growth of non-profit organizations. She is delighted to join MusicBox as it provides an opportunity to combine her life-long love of music and dance with her commitment to ensuring safe, supportive, healthy environments for children.

Shannon Thom

National Program Coordinator, Western Canada · she/her

Hometown: Scarborough, ON (traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, on land covered by Treaty 13).

Shannon joined MusicBox in 2021, driven by a lifelong passion for music and belief that music plays a vital role in child development and holistic wellness. In fact, her undergraduate capstone research investigated links between music, infant-caregiver relationships and mental health. Shannon loves working with young people and has a background supporting volunteers in campus health and community stroke settings. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Molecular Biology & Music and a Master of Public Health from the University of Guelph. She is excited to continue to bridge her interests in public health and music through supporting the work and mission of MusicBox Children's Charity.

Annie Kennedy

Hometown: Teeswater, ON (traditional territory of many nations including the Haudenosaunee, Ojibway, Chippewa and Anishnabek, on land covered by the Upper Canada Treaties).

Annie joined MusicBox in 2022, motivated by a love of mentoring and supporting children in communities across the country. She loves children and has experience working with and teaching children in her five years as a lifeguard and swim instructor.. She has a background supporting volunteers in campus health and wellbeing and enjoys working with young people.She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Public Policy and a Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy from the University of Guelph. Annie wishes that she played an instrument but enjoys listening to music much more! She is excited to continue to support young people and children in their love of music in this role.
